Manama Souq revamp will be finished by mid-2020

Revamp work on Manama Souq is set to be finished by mid-2020, officials have said.

There are five stages to the development, which affects 300 stores, and these are set to be completed in the next seven months, reports the Daily Tribune.

Storefronts and signage and the facade of many of the old buildings will be improved.

Nader Al Moayyed, Chief Executive Officer of the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA), said, “Manama Souq is a well-known touristic site and an attractive destination for many shoppers therefore it is essential to develop its infrastructure with an aim to attract Bahraini visitors and tourists from the GCC countries and beyond.

“The revitalisation of the Manama Souq, and the quest to develop and preserve it aims to re-energise the tourism sector and shift it to be one of the main contributors to the national economy.”

The news comes after the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities announced it would be restoring the Manama Souq minaret in November.

BACA is currently calling for old pictures and videos of the structure to help with restorations.
