Candles Coffee

Visually impressive café in a converted Bahraini house

Time Out Says

Situated in a rennovated traditional Bahraini house, Candles Coffee is visually impressive. The well-thought-out decor – think Arabic artifacts and various other authentic surroundings – set the scene and help to create a pleasant ambience. Alternatively, take a seat in the picturesque garden, where in the past we have enjoyed getting stuck into generously-sized salads and sandwiches, sucking on the freshest of fruit juices, and puffing on clouds of sweet tobacco from long hookahs.

Sadly, a recent foray to Candles revealed that the café’s reputation as the coffee hub of the city’s cultured crowd no longer meets with reality. Hostile staff will sluggishly show you to your table, and woe betide anyone who actually wants to order something to eat. A longed-for starter of stuffed peppers was – like many of the dishes, including a simple request for a slice of date cake – unavailable. It’s all such a shame because the setting is gorgeous and does provide a peaceful respite from the city.

Candles is capable of working magic, but until it stops resting on its laurels, our advice would be to arrive having already eaten and settle instead for a thirst-quenching lemon and mint juice, or the creamy coconut shisha. Also arrange for a taxi to pick you up in advance; the staff certainly won’t order one for you.
