King Fahd Causeway Restaurant

Border crossing restaurant with excellent views

Time Out Says

If it’s peace and quiet you are after, you won’t go far wrong at this rather surreal outlet. Perched high above the border crossing between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, the restaurant offers stellar views out over the sparkling waters of the Gulf. However, the expense involved in getting out this far without your own transport (there’s no buses and taxis cost a whopping BD40 return) means that the vast interior tends to be eerily empty.

When Time Out last visited, the utter desolation of the dining area had us convinced that the restaurant had been chosen as the location for a post-apocalyptical TV drama. Once you finally manage to locate a waiter (hollering loudly into the kitchen sealed the deal for us), you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the cuisine on offer. The selection is far from groundbreaking with Arabic staples predictably ruling the roost. These, however, are served with a modicum of panache that belies the dreariness of the setting. A bowl of moutabal is perfectly smoky and is let down only by the slightly dry bread it is served with.

The fattoush is even better: the liberal use of garlic adding some welcome sweetness to the citrus zing of the salad. A main of hammour machboos is equally enjoyable. The doughty cuisine of the Gulf will never rank all that highly on a world scale, but the tangy fish-packed version of the biryani-style Bedouin dish served here will please all but the most intransigent of critics.
