It’s certainly not the island’s cheapest brunch and if you’re looking for large groups of inebriated people singing drinking songs or bad karaoke, then this is not the place for you.
But if you want a laid-back, relaxed atmosphere, classy music, decent grape and possibly the most varied food offering I’ve seen so far at a brunch, then give La Med a try.
Brunch starts at 12.30pm and we arrived at 12.40pm not having booked and managed, much to our delight, to bag the last table outside on the terrace making the most of the current delightful weather.
Our server quickly brought sparkling water and our selection of grape and we settled down for a chat in the sunshine before venturing inside to the buffet.
My companion, being a non meat eater, was really impressed at the huge selection of seafood from sushi to lobsters and clams and even salmon mousse topped with caviar!
I dived into the salad bar loading up with very lightly battered okra (delicious), hummus, potato salad, smoked hammour, olives, crispy chopped veggies and a couple of rounds of Arabic bread which had been kept warm in one of the big serving dishes – this is something which frequently spoils Arabic bread for me, served hot it’s delicious and ideal for mopping up the region’s myriad dips and salads but cold, its thinness leaves a resemblance to cardboard, so full points to La Med for keeping it hot.
I added in some prawns and a sliver of the deliciously rich salmon mousse and, to be honest, could quite happily have finished my meal without leaving the salad bar.
My dining partner also went for the mousse as well as some poached salmon, cooked perfectly with not a hint of dryness, clams and a selection from the attractive array of sushi on offer – the one area which was just good rather than exceptional.
My one disappointment on the salad counter was the absence of baba ghanoush, a dish I adore. However, when I mentioned this to the member of management circulating among the tables he immediately offered to bring me some.
For mains, she went back to the seafood counter (twice) and discovered a deep love of lobsters, never previously a favourite, their meat skillfully exposed and delicately sweet.
I opted for the wagyu sirloin which was absolutely delicious. Pink and tender the meat was so soft as to virtually melt in the mouth needing very little chewing, quite a feat when cooking a large joint.
The Yorkshire puddings were reassuringly misshapen, a sure sign of home cooking, and coupled with a selection of potatoes and roast veggies – admittedly, their proximity to the meat would render this delicious accompaniment out of bounds to my companion but she certainly didn’t feel she was missing out. There was also a good variety of mustards, including my favourite English classic, which usually has to be specially requested, and horseradish sauce.
I was particularly impressed that, even though we sat chatting for quite some time and didn’t head inside for our mains until around 2.45pm, all stations had been replenished, the sirloin had not become dry and there was a fresh piece of duck on offer.
In truth I hardly had room for dessert but, since I was checking it out on your behalf, I felt it would be remiss of me not to at least sample a few mouthfuls.
I had a delicious strawberry mouse and a fruity sponge cake, both of which were excellent, the crème brulee was a bit disappointing – no glazing on the top and it tasted like high quality custard – but the rest was good enough to more than compensate.
My companion went for the Arabic selection choosing several small finger pastries which she said were sweet without being overpowering and a taster of um ali which was perfectly creamy and nutty.
Overall I was very impressed with La Med’s brunch and even more so when I spotted that one of the board rooms next to the restaurant had been set aside as a kids’ area with what appeared to be games and a large screen TV playing cartoons.
