Lemon Shisha Bistro

A hearty café offering in a beautiful setting

Time Out Says

Sitting on the terrace of Lemon Shisha Bistro is a relaxing experience. You can look over the stunning Amwaj Lagoon below and people-watch from the comfortable sofa-chairs while sipping on one of their many juicy mocktails. The café itself is brightly coloured in yellows and greens, making for a vibrant spring atmosphere.

When we arrive, we’re greeted by friendly servers and moments later the menus thud down on the table. They’re hefty, they’re huge and a tad overwhelming, but filled with all the sections you would expect from an international café – salads, soups, sandwiches, burgers, pastas, pizzas, desserts – each brimming with plenty of options.

On our first skim through, we come to the realisation that this is not light café fare – a realisation which is cemented when we receive our very generously sized starters. But we’re pleasantly surprised by the creamy flavours in our Tuscan spinach and artichoke dip we scoop up with lightly salted nachos. And we guiltily enjoy the gooey, warm mozzarella in its breaded casing, slathered in mildly spiced salsa.

Soon enough, we wipe the plate clean but immediately regret it when our just-as-generously-portioned main courses come out. I plumped for the rock shrimp tempura salad on a fairly greedy-eyed whim. This is an enjoyable dish if you’re as hungry as I was – the tempura is beautiful and crispy, the dressing is creamy and indulgent, and yet the fresh salad ingredients make you feel as though you haven’t fallen completely off the healthy wagon. More enjoyable, however, is the presentation of the tuna melt sandwich. It may be standard café fare but a good test of what this kitchen can produce. The plate comes with a small steel bucket of spiced French fries next to a jar of purple, fruity coleslaw and a tuna sandwich tower, giving a nod to their attention to detail. The chips are great, the coleslaw is unique and the tuna sandwich hit the spot (although they are somewhat heavy-handed with the mayonnaise).

By the time we’re done with these dishes, we’re heading dangerously close to a food coma but we manage a taste of the molten chocolate fondant before we throw in the napkin. It looks stunning as it steams on the plate; we watch the melted chocolate cascade and then scoop it up with some cake and vanilla ice-cream. It’s tasty and rounded off our meal well but this particular dish isn’t as good as we were expecting.

All in all, Lemon Shisha Bistro has adopted a successful Gulf formula as it offers hearty food, plenty of options, vibrant décor and a comfortable place to chill with shisha. Not to mention it’s all very reasonably priced for the quality of what you get.
