Ritz-Carlton Tea Lounge

Plush afternoon tea spot with five-star hospitality

Time Out Says

High tea is as quintessentially English as terrible teeth, pint-downing chavs and the royal family. At The Ritz-Carlton, the finery of five-star hospitality is fused with the warmth of an Arabian welcome, and the cross-cultural make-up is further reflected in the foods; smoked salmon sarnies share space with Moroccan sweets, and it’s up to you whether you accompany these with a cup of Earl Grey char or a shot of thick Arabic coffee.

If it’s a sandwich you’re after, you’ve come to the right place – when did someone last cut your crusts off for you? The BLT plus avocado is a mountainous and rather messy offering, but with lashings of smoky beef bacon and creamy avocado, it’s delicious. The selection of finger sandwiches on soft white and brown bread is a more sedate, but equally successful affair, with dainty cheese, chicken and egg mayo fillings. If you’re not feeling particularly British or Arabian, then wash it down with an ambrosial South African honeybush tea.

Seated in the plush lounge with lofty vaulted ceilings, colossal chandeliers, fresh white linen and highly polished wood, watching the hustle and bustle in the hotel’s lobby with a pianist tinkling the ivories, you could quite happily wile the whole afternoon away here.
