Popular Amwaj Lagoon steak specialist with outdoor seating and quirky decor

Veranda’s a bit of a Bahrain institution so I was pleased when our editor suggested I check out the newest addition to the family at The Lagoon in Amwaj.

It was one of the first venues to open there so is well established with the lush greenery all around and quirky décor keeping faith with its sister restaurants.

The girlfriend and I chose to sit outside so I could indulge in my filthy smoking habit and, rather than have starters, we opted to dive straight into the mains and save some space for dessert.

I’m a big meat fan and was happy to see the really reasonably priced steaks on offer. I chose the T-bone and asked for medium. The waiter’s suggestion of ‘medium-well’ should have given a clue that this cow would be well and truly dead by the time it got to me.

My food arrived on a sizzling hotplate with a good selection of crunchy fresh veggies and seasoned wedges – so far, so good. But the steak, although tasty, was very over-cooked, not a hint of pink to be seen. It’s a testament to the good quality of the meat that it was still tasty but medium it most definitely was not.

Now, I know it’s not easy to under cook meat when it’s being served on a skillet and is, in fact, still cooking at the table but that’s why I asked for medium in the first place.

My lovely companion went for the veggie option with the dish named great stuffed mushrooms. They did indeed look great on the menu picture, succulent and golden, filled with an apparent salsa of fresh vegetables and what appeared to be feta cheese.

Yes, it clearly stated tandoori baked, but we were both somewhat surprised when they arrived bright pink rather than the delicate gold of the menu picture and with any cheese well and truly hidden.

My partner said the taste was ‘interesting’ and she ate them all, so they can’t have been that bad. But to my mind they simply tasted odd and the vegetables, rather than being shredded were simply mush.

On to the desserts and I, again, fared best. I chose the sizzling hot ice cream chocolate brownie. The taste was excellent and the bubbling chocolate sauce plentiful but, once more, service on a hotplate meant that by the time I got to the bottom the brownie was completely dried out and sticking to the plate.

Madam’s tiramisu was huge, in fact quite daunting, and rather dry but that didn’t stop her asking for a doggy bag to take the leftovers home.

All in all an average experience that was a bit of a disappointment for a restaurant that’s part of such a popular chain.
