Top healthy takeaways in Bahrain

Ordering in doesn’t have to be calorific

When you think of takeaway, there’s a good chance you picture pizzas smothered in cheese, or an Indian order with three different types of bhuna and nine poppadoms.

Although there’s a time and a place for that sort of thing, sometimes what you need is something light and healthy.

Here in Bahrain, there are plenty of healthy options that won’t leave you filled with regret for not having ordered a burger.

Read on for our pick of the top healthy takeaways in Bahrain.

Baker & Spice

This Middle Eastern chain is all about using the freshest local and organic ingredients, meaning you’ll be too focused on how good the food tastes to even notice how healthy it is. You could eat here for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with dishes like the ever-popular avocado on toast, signature shakshuka and a huge selection of focaccia.
On Talabat. Daily 8am-11pm. Al Aali Mall, Seef (1360 9666).

Healthy Calorie

As the name would suggest, Healthy Calorie is all about helping you keep track of what you’re eating. Each of the dishes has calorie, carb, protein and fat counts, and there’s even a keto section for anyone following this diet. You can choose from dishes including quinoa bowls, quesadillas and burgers. Who says calorie counting has to be boring?
On Talabat. Various outlets including Juffair, Riffa and MODA Mall.

Higher Grounds Cafe

This spot in Tubli is well-known for its incredible coffee, but you shouldn’t skip the food if you’re looking for somewhere healthy to eat. The dishes on the menu include some of our favourites with a healthy twist, such as the chicken burrito meal (sans wrap and with wholesome organic brown rice) or the hot cauliflower tacos. Plus, it’s amazing for veggies – soy shawarma or vegetarian hot dogs, anyone?
On Talabat. Daily 10.30am-9pm. Tubli (1784 0050).

Plant Cafe

With a name like Plant Cafe, you might be picturing a delivery of sad-looking salads or really bland food – but you’d be seriously mistaken. Plant Cafe, Bahrain’s first vegan restaurant, does things we didn’t even know were possible with vegan ingredients, transforming them into curries, dumplings and even cheese boards.
On Carriage. Daily 10am-9.45pm. Hamala Hills, Hamad Town (1700 1677).

Poke Kafe

As you can make your own bowls at Poke Cafe, you can make them as healthy – or as unhealthy – as you like. Bases include zoodles, cauliflower rice or spinach and other greens if you’re going all out on the healthiness, and you can choose toppings like tofu, salmon, broccoli and avocado. Everything is gluten and dairy free, too.
On Talabat. Daily 11.30am-10.30pm. Shara Al Thula, Hamala (1728 1888) or Al Aali Mall, Seef (1792 8222).

Seed Cafe

Is there a healthier way to start your day than with an acai bowl? We don’t think so, and that’s what Seed Cafe does best. You can go bananas and make your own or choose from the signature bowls such as… go bananas, hazelnut dream or the glow bowl. If it’s not breakfast time and you’re not a fan of eating breakfast for dinner, there’s plenty of salads on offer too.
On Talabat. Daily 7.15am-10.45pm. Saar (1741 3555) or Riffa (1724 5383).
